Tov Furniture ideas and shopping tips

I'm going to let you in on a little secret - I love buying furniture second hand. It's like the pieces you find at a thrift shot, flea market, or just on the side of the road come pre-installed with a heaping helping of personality and potential. After all, if you only paid $5 for it, you'll probably feel a little more at liberty to get creative with it. That's one of the reasons I love the growing trend of repurposing furniture, especially turning regular pieces into bathroom vanities. It gives your bathroom a great unique flair and an unexpected focal point. Of course, if you don't like the idea of hacking up your own furniture, or want a little more sophistication than swap meet chic, the...
When people talk about "decor," they usually mean those finishing touches - big and small - that you use to perfect the look and feel of your living room. Sometimes it comes up in the context of a kitchen or bedroom as well, but more often than not the bathroom is hugely overlooked. Now, that isn't to say that it's totally unheard of in a bathroom - far from it - but usually homeowners stick to smaller details - towels, shower curtains, designer mirrors, or the occasional candle holder. But adding full sized accent furniture - not just small designer touches- can really do wonders for your bathroom as well. The best part? Since it's uncommon, it'll be eye catching and even more unique. [caption id="attachment_2207" align="aligncenter" width="234" caption="This Simple, Compact C...
Above all else, patio furniture needs to be weather proof. If it isn't, no matter how good it looks or how comfortable it is, it isn't going to last you very long. But unfortunately that means that all too often people end up getting either super utilitarian furniture that doesn't look so great, or attractive but less practical pieces that won't be looking so good after a season or two. Zuo's island-inspired collection of outdoor furniture offers the best of both worlds, in flexible packages designed to fit almost any sized patio. They're easy to customize, and are fashion forward, fun, and just a little futuristic all in one. [caption id="attachment_3612" align="aligncenter" width="500" cap...

There are a lot of different kinds of patio furniture out there, and not all of them are created equal. From cheapie plastic deck chairs to fancy-hotel style outdoor daybeds, style, quality, and price can all vary quite a bit. So if you're a little overwhelmed by selection, don't worry - it's not just you. Choosing the right patio furniture for your outdoor space can be incredibly difficult, and even a little confusing. So how do you know what will look right, last a long time, and cost something reasonable? This quick and dirty patio furniture buyer's guide will tell you everything you need to keep in mind before you buy.

If you're looking for a bold, colorful statement piece for your modern living space, you've come to the right place. I'm always on the lookout for unique, unusual new takes on modern furniture. Regular readers of the blog will know that some of my absolute favorite modern furniture picks are ones that riff on antique designs. PolArt, a specialty furniture designer from Mexico, offers modern furniture and accent pieces that are all this and more, with breathtaking takes on classical furnishings made with brightly colored polyresin, perfect for a statement piece that will really wow.

By and large, outdoor furniture isn't terribly interesting. Sure, it can be attractive. But I'd venture to say it's not often that you find an outdoor patio set that's really unusual or unique. If you do a lot of outdoor entertaining and want an outdoor furniture set that will really wow, you need to think a little bit outside the box of traditional wrought iron, teak, and natural or resin wicker furniture. To get a look that's really bold and one of a kind, look for something like the amazingly, almost outrageously modern outdoor furniture from PolArt.

Colorful Cast Resin Construction

I'm in the unique position of having a compact, urban lifestyle but taste that tends more toward the antique. Now, in Europe and in some older parts of east coast cities, mixing the two is far from unheard of. In fact, historical apartment buildings in Paris are defined as much by their interior decor as their architecture. But if you live in a more modern building, it can be hard to pull off a lush, expansive antique decor. Urban chic design is my favorite compromise between the two, taking a little of the classy, sophisticated historical influence of antiques and adding a unique modern twist.

What Do We Get From Antiques?

[caption id="attachment_5283" align="aligncenter" width="467"]synthetic wicker and powder coated aluminum are all the rage, there's a reason that most furniture that's left outside year round - like park benches and picnic tables - are made of wood instead. Authentic teak wood in particular is more naturally weather resistant than almost any synthetic material, and makes for outdoor furniture that can last as long as your h...

When you have a beautiful view, you want to be able to enjoy it. That's basic stuff. But actually pulling it off presents an interesting conundrum. Enjoying your view probably entails having a comfortable place to sit and look at it, but setting out a bunch of furniture on a deck or patio, or even in front of a large picture window, can actually block some of that view from other angles.  One of my favorite workarounds for this problem is using wire frame or clear acrylic furniture. IT won't clear the way completely, but being able to see through your furniture can help minimize its visual impact. If you're looking for a compromise between functionality and aesthetics, these see-through materials might be the answer.

I recently went apartment hunting with a good friend of mine who's in the market for an artist's loft. Regular readers might have noticed that I'm really embracing the trend towards a more industrial style home, especially renovated warehouse spaces, so this trip was a real treat. What was even better is that I got to see a whole slew of furniture made from reclaimed industrial parts, from huge wood tabletops mounted on cast iron legs salvaged from machine shops to adjustable stools saved from turn of the century factories. This renewed industrial style is becoming hugely popular, b...

Solid wood bathroom vanities are becoming much rarer these days. There are a number of reasons for this, but ultimately most of them boil down to cost. Solid wood vanities are more expensive than ones made of compressed particle board or MDF, which are becoming exponentially more popular in furniture of all types. For bathroom vanities, it's also a question of striking the right balance between showcasing the wood and protecting it from moisture damage. Many vanities that do put a wood finish front and center of the design use patterned exotic wood veneers to creat...

Summer is the season for outdoor entertaining; barbecues and pool parties and just lounging around spending time with friends and family and soaking up a little sun. But it can be difficult to decorate a one-season space, especially if you have a relatively small deck or patio. One of the best ways to maximize seating in a small outdoor space is to opt for nesting outdoor furniture. These are full outdoor dining sets that fit into a very small footprint. In most cases, that means a table and chairs that can seat four or more that you can stow away so it takes up no more space than the table itself.

You don't typically think of kid's furniture as being particularly stylish or beautiful. After all, most of it isn't meant to be - it's meant to be pint sized, colorful, and durable, but not particularly permanent. It appeals to children while they're small, but is often meant to be grown out of. But just because furniture is designed for small kids doesn't mean it can't appeal to grown ups as well. In fact, if you know where to look, you can even find kid's furniture that will look good (and even be useful) even after your kids have outgrown it, or at the very least coordinate well with your decor. [caption id="attachment_8090" align="aligncenter" width="372"]outdoor furniture is right for your outdoor space? We've got a quick introduction to both to help you decide.

A big, grand front entryway is all about making a good first impression on visitors. But often this space is only used by guests - many homeowners come in through a back or side door or through the garage rather than the front entrance. But just because the door you actually use is out of sight doesn't mean you should neglect it. Quite the opposite: this heavily trafficked area of the home should be designed for maximum efficiency to keep the space neat and clear.

Most people enjoy summer for the entertaining; the backyard barbecues, pool parties, and long summer evening spent outside with friends and family. Most outdoor furniture reflects this: big dining or bar sets and outdoor sofas or sectionals designed to seat a crowd. But for those of us who would rather stretch out with a good book than host a potluck? Sprawling outdoor furniture is often overkill. If you're looking to spend some quiet time reading on a sunny summer afternoon, a cozy outdoor reading nook for one might be more up your alley.

The Problem With Outdoor Chairs

Weathered, reclaimed, and restored furniture and furnishings have seen a huge boom in popularity in the last year, especially anything involving rugged, upcycled wood surfaces. From reclaimed factory furniture for an industrial style to a more eclectic, cottage-like flea market chic, practical antiques and innovative restorations have become must-have decor items. But you don't have to be a swap-meet maven to get this look in your own home. Many manufacturers and designers, like Nuevo, have started offering high-end lines that feature reclaimed wood elements, making it possible to get a restoration style without having to do any of the legwork yo...

Everyone likes to have friends over once in a while - even people who aren't every-weekend entertainers. But entertaining guests gets a lot more complicated the less space you have; if you don't have a formal dining room, a big open kitchen, or even much space at all beyond your ordinary living areas, there isn't exactly space to install a home bar, game room, or extensive home theater. But that doesn't mean entertaining isn't possible. In fact, choosing a few small, multitasking pieces of furniture can make it possible to entertain a crowd without sacrificing space you'd miss when you're home alone.

Competing for space - counter space, drawer space, or sink space - is one of the big frustrations of sharing a bathroom. That's why having a really great double vanity is one of the key components of building a better master bathroom. You want to have plenty of separate space for each partner, both to make the bathroom more usable and to help keep the peace. But your bathroom vanity will also be the visual focal point of the bathroom. That means means size and storage shouldn't be the only considerations. Wire Bar Chair 188015 in Chrome from Zuo Modern
