Inspired by the Greek myth of a Corinthian girl who drew a portrait of her beloved, before he departed for war, by tracing the outline of his shadow on a wall to have an image to remember him. Leighton, exchanging the tale to a Gothic castle, altered it to Medieval dress, armor and a beautiful red-haired maiden, adding to the drama there are crusader ships waiting outside the castle walls. Leighton's work bridged the commercial and critical divide earning a place in the Victorians' hearts. Famous for his romantic and vivid Edwardian and Medieval compositions, artist Leighton drew inspiration from historic eras, literature, romance and the Pre-Raphaelite movement.
