As a French artist Janmot, with his love of nature excelled at romantic scenes and classic realism, lived most of his life in Lyon while studying in Paris and Rome, and exhibiting at the Salon de Paris. Janmot was seen as a French part of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood but slowly transitioned into Romanticism and Symbolism, the series of "Poem of the Soul" is considered his most significant work.
