Noted for her heavenly beauty shown in profile to signify virtue, Giovanna died in childbirth, the venerated young bride of an influential Florentine family with links to the Medicis. Her husband's love is reflected in the inscription found on the cartouche in the background of the portrait: "If only art could reproduce the character and spirit! In all the world a more beautiful painting will not be found." Ghirlandaio, a celebrated portraitist, had several prominent patrons and himself was one of Michelangelo's earliest teachers.
