One of the founders of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, Victorian Millais's version is beloved for its painstakingly natural realism, a practice rare in the period. The flowers near this legendary beauty are all symbolic: the daisy for forsaken love, the violets for faithfulness and chastity, and the poppies for death.
