I’ve never been a big fan of medicine cabinets. This might seem like a strange admission, especially because medicine cabinets are a tried-and-true, stalwart ally in the battle to make small bathrooms<\/a> usable. But as a storage option, medicine cabinets have always seemed a little clunky and inelegant to me – they only do one thing, and because of their necessary size and shape restrictions, they don’t always do it very well. But then I found Robern<\/a>, whose high-tech medicine cabinets blow their competition out of the water, and offer much more than just the baseline I-need-more-storage functionality. What kind of stuff do they have?<\/p>\n

Ever gotten out of a hot shower on a cold day and found yourself struggling to get ready around a fogged up mirror? In a traditional bathroom, it’s one of those unavoidable every day annoyances that you just learn to live with, taking your smeared, drippy mirror or hazy reflection in stride. But Robern’s medicine cabinets, like this Arch Mirror<\/a>, are made with built in defoggers that prevent the accumulation of steam in the first place, not only making it usable the moment you step out of your hot hot shower, but also saving you having to clean up those drips, streaks, and smears.<\/p>\n

This is actually probably my favorite feature of Robern’s medicine cabinets, and, to me, one of the most revolutionary. There are some things you just can’t stow away, even if you have the space to – electric razors and electric toothbrushes are the best examples, but straightening irons, curling irons, and hair driers are all up there, too. If it needs to be plugged in, especially if it needs to be plugged in 24\/7, it’s probably going to spend most of its time on your countertop. But Robern’s medicine cabinets, like their Fairhaven Cabinet<\/a> come complete with electrical outlets or full electrical shelves, allowing you to stash these power-hungry items and keep your counter clear. You can even hook up your smartphone or mp3 player for an easy way to get music in your bathroom.<\/p>\n

One of the things I hate the most about medicine cabinets, especially ones installed in close quarters, is that you have to dodge out of the way to get access to them. The doors are too big and clumsy to interact with, and don’t have nearly the same comfortable ease of, say, opening a drawer. Robern’s Uplift Medicine Cabinet<\/a> addresses this problem explicitly, exchanging the traditional swing or slide medicine cabinet doors for an innovative, seamless glass panel that lifts straight upwards for zero clearance installation. This gives you full access to the inside of your medicine cabinet<\/a> without having to dodge the door. And, it also happens to look super cool<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Night lights are one little luxury that almost no one (okay, no grown ups) would think to want. But if you’ve ever stumbled into the bathroom late at night and blinded yourself with the regular lights (or just stumbled around in the dark so you won’t have to) the prospect of having a small, dim but efficient glow to greet you might not seem like such a bad idea. Robern’s M-Series<\/a> medicine cabinets come with a very soft blue light built into the bottom edge. It’s bright enough to let you see your bathroom in the dark without blinding you or waking you all the way up.<\/p>\n

I’ll admit this is one of the more decadent options that Robern offers, but it isn’t entirely without merit. Some of their medicine cabinets, like this M-Series<\/a>, come with built in cold storage – basically a tiny, sectioned off refrigerator inside your medicine cabinet. But while having a nicely chilled bottle of artisan water waiting for you when you get out of your shower is undeniably lavish, having a refrigerator in your medicine cabinet can actually be a really practical solution if you have temperature sensitive medication or beauty products. And, let’s admit it, having a nice cool face cream is a luxury that might be worth it either way.<\/p>\n

While this one is neither particularly revolutionary nor Robern exclusive, I figure it’s worth mentioning that many of their medicine cabinets are designed to be installed partially or fully recessed into your bathroom wall. This has the dual advantage of providing you more storage space in a medicine cabinet that takes up less space in your bathroom. This is especially invaluable in a small bathroom, where traditional wall mounted medicine cabinets can feel a little in-your-face and oppressive. A recessed medicine cabinet like this Framed Cabinet<\/a> won’t infringe on your space any more than a mirror, while offering all the storage space you need.<\/p>\n

So it turns out, medicine cabinets don’t have to be a last worst resort – they can actually be a welcome addition to a luxury bathroom, and a pretty darn good option for adding storage to a small bathroom.
