I’ve talked a lot lately about gray, shaker style bathroom vanities. After all, it’s one of the main breakout design trends this year, and one that beautifully combines many of the smaller trends this season. But today I want to take a look at one bathroom that makes brilliant use of this trend to create a relaxed, sunny, yet sophisticated seaside style, and how other design elements can bring out the best of this popular transitional style.<\/p>\n Gray bathroom vanities don’t build a bathroom on their own – it takes careful coordination to bring out their beauty and elegance (By Celtic Home Gallery, interior by Krista Watterworth)\n

Get The Look<\/strong>: Start with a gray shaker style vanity<\/a>. From there, balance traditional and contemporary features, like the marble tile<\/a> with a freestanding tub<\/a>. Then add matching brushed nickel accents – especially the faucet<\/a>, tub filler<\/a>, picture frame<\/a>, and other hardware – to carry the bright, silvery color scheme throughout the rest of the bathroom.<\/p>\n

Why It Works<\/strong>:<\/p>\n

Gray is one of the most popular colors this year for a reason. It’s subtle yet refined, and in-between in a way that makes it beautifully compatible with a transitional style. This bathroom by Celtic Home Gallery uses gray in different tones and finishes to help unify the space and give it a sense of harmony. The vanity is clearly the anchor, but it’s the smaller details, like the brushed nickel hardware and subtle gray veining on the marble floor that help visually unite the bathroom. The reflective surfaces of the hardware in particular help carry the eye through the bathroom, pairing the formal-feeling glint of polished silver with fairly simple, modern fixtures. This combination of gray and white feels delicate and elegant, but without any color at all,\u00a0 a grayscale color scheme can feel cold and lack definition. The silvery blue paint on the walls saves this bathroom from being bland, and gives it an airy, seaside feel that amplifies the natural light. The color isn’t too bold or assertive, and ultimately is very nearly gray itself, but it’s just enough to cast an inviting blue tinge on the room as a whole without overpowering the underlying color scheme.<\/p>\n

In a truly seaside style bathroom, the vanity would probably either be white or a pale natural wood tone. Having a gray finish instead gives the space a slightly more formal feel, so despite the very spa-like white plush towels and wicker basket, the space feels sophisticated polished, rather than simply casual and sunny, and a bit more refined than even the same bathroom would with the exact same vanity done in white.
