This year, I&#8217;d like to suggest a few simple ways to help green your life &#8211; and in the spirit of spreading awareness, a few reasons why you should bother.<\/p>\n<h2>Electricity<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12891\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12891\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Lyerly Bleached Wood LED Table Lamp 93-9245-LED from Dimond\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12891\" height=\"390\" src=\"https:\/\/homethang.com\/blogimages\/\/2015\/04\/Lyerly-Bleached-Wood-LED-Table-Lamp-93-9245-LED-from-Dimond.jpg\" width=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homethangs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Lyerly-Bleached-Wood-LED-Table-Lamp-93-9245-LED-from-Dimond.jpg 480w, https:\/\/homethangs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/Lyerly-Bleached-Wood-LED-Table-Lamp-93-9245-LED-from-Dimond-400x325.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12891\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Lyerly Bleached Wood LED Table Lamp 93-9245-LED from Dimond<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Sure, there\u2019s the conventional knowledge that you should turn off lights when you leave a room \u2013 and that\u2019s definitely true. But in some cases it&#8217;s the lights themselves that are the problem. Both fixtures and bulbs can be inefficient, using more electricity to produce the same amount of light (plus heat!).<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why It\u2019s Bad For You:<\/strong> Waste is waste, period \u2013 even if it\u2019s \u201cjust a bulb,\u201d it can make a bigger difference than you might think on your monthly electricity bill.<br \/>\n<strong>Why It\u2019s Bad For The Environment:<\/strong> The more electricity you use, the more electricity needs to be created. That means more fossil fuels burned, and more harmful greenhouse gasses released into the environment \u2013 or, depending on the area you live in, a greater demand for nuclear power, hydropower, or even wind or solar power. While the last three are better options, reducing energy demand reduces the land area needed to house those energy-capturing facilities.<br \/>\n<strong>What To Do<\/strong> \u2013 <em>Good:<\/em> Turn of lights when you aren\u2019t using them. <em>Better:<\/em> Replace inefficient incandescent bulbs with compact florescent bulbs (CFLs). <i>Best:<\/i> Replace old lamps and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homethangs.com\/lighting-635.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Lighting Fixtures\">lighting fixtures<\/a> with new, EnergyStar rated versions. <em>Even Better:<\/em> Have a professional do a home energy audit and make a plan to improve your home\u2019s efficiency \u2013 everything from replacing <a href=\"https:\/\/www.homethangs.com\/appliances-733.html\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"Appliances\">appliances<\/a> to sealing your windows. <em>Bonus:<\/em>Install a solar panel to help supply some of the electricity to your home to further offset your carbon footprint.<\/p>\n<h2>Water<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12892\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12892\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"C-100 Green 3-Jet Showerhead 04080000 from Hansgrohe\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12892\" height=\"438\" src=\"https:\/\/homethang.com\/blogimages\/\/2015\/04\/C-100-Green-3-Jet-Showerhead-04080000-from-Hansgrohe.jpg\" width=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homethangs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/C-100-Green-3-Jet-Showerhead-04080000-from-Hansgrohe.jpg 480w, https:\/\/homethangs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/C-100-Green-3-Jet-Showerhead-04080000-from-Hansgrohe-400x365.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12892\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">C-100 Green 3-Jet Showerhead 04080000 from Hansgrohe<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s all too easy to waste water and not think about it \u2013 as easy as turning on a faucet. But water is one of the earth\u2019s most precious resources \u2013 less than 2% of all water can be used for drinking, cooking, or even watering crops, and most of it is frozen. In may areas, we\u2019re quickly depleting aquifers and leaving riverbeds dry in the summer months \u2013 both resources that renew much more slowly than we\u2019re consuming them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why It\u2019s Bad For You:<\/strong> In the short term, it isn\u2019t, and that\u2019s a big part of the problem. For most of us, water comes from the sky and out of the tap and that\u2019s that, but\u2026<br \/>\n<strong>Why It\u2019s Bad For The Environment:<\/strong> Many parts of the world are experiencing record-breaking droughts, even as close to home as California, and a lack of good, clean, H2O is rapidly killing important crops. Once we deplete our natural (and man-made) reserves, if we don\u2019t make drastic changes in our water consumption, the situation will only get worse.<br \/>\n<strong>What To Do:<\/strong> <em>Good<\/em><i>: <\/i>Turn off water when you aren\u2019t using it \u2013 that includes while you\u2019re brushing teeth, shaving, and scrubbing dishes \u2013 and take shorter showers. <em>Better:<\/em> Replace shower heads in your home with low flow varieties, and check and replace leaky faucets with low flow faucets. <em>Best:<\/em> Do a full accounting of your home\u2019s water consumption, everything from your washer and drier to your dishwasher and sprinkler system. Figure out where you\u2019re over-using and make a plan to stop the flow. <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homethangs.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/low-flow-toilets-arent-the-bane-they-used-to-be-fancy-new-tech-to-help-you-get-with-the-flow\/\">Low flow toilets<\/a> can be a great investment, as can <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homethangs.com\/blog\/2012\/03\/waterless-urinals-for-home-and-commercial-use-how-they-work-and-why-you-want-one\/\">waterless urinals<\/a> if you\u2019ve got more than a few boys living in your home.<\/p>\n<h2>Food<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12893\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12893\" style=\"width: 480px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.homethangs.com\/decorative-planters-809.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"This year, consider replacing some (or all!) of your lawn with fruit and vegetable planters (by Aloe Designs)\" class=\"size-full wp-image-12893\" height=\"318\" src=\"https:\/\/homethang.com\/blogimages\/\/2015\/04\/This-year-consider-replacing-some-or-all-of-your-lawn-with-fruit-and-vegetable-planters-by-Aloe-Designs.jpg\" width=\"480\" srcset=\"https:\/\/homethangs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/This-year-consider-replacing-some-or-all-of-your-lawn-with-fruit-and-vegetable-planters-by-Aloe-Designs.jpg 480w, https:\/\/homethangs.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2015\/04\/This-year-consider-replacing-some-or-all-of-your-lawn-with-fruit-and-vegetable-planters-by-Aloe-Designs-400x265.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 480px) 100vw, 480px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-12893\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This year, consider replacing some (or all!) of your lawn with fruit and vegetable planters (by Aloe Designs)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>What you eat matters, both for your body and for your planet. These days, so much of what we put in our bodies is processed, preserved, and shipped hundreds of miles or more from where we buy and eat them.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Why It\u2019s Bad For You:<\/strong> Heavily processed food isn\u2019t natural; everything from hydrogenated oil to too much sodium can build up in your body and make you sick over time. Plus, even fresh produce that spends a lot of time on the back of a truck loses its nutritive value the longer it sits between when it\u2019s picked and when it gets on your plate. Local grown foods are fresher, tastier, and better for you \u2013 some of them, like honey, can even help prevent seasonal allergies.<br \/>\n<strong>Why It\u2019s Bad For The Environment:<\/strong> Don\u2019t get me wrong \u2013 our ability to transport food to where it\u2019s needed is a beautiful thing, especially for areas that can\u2019t grow their own food. But, shipping food means burning fossil fuels, and canning and packaging food means more waste for landfills and wasting resources to wrap products you could have gotten fresh out of the ground. As well, non-organic food often uses harmful pesticides and fertilizers that contaminate our (precious, limited!) drinking water.<br \/>\n<strong>What To Do About It:<\/strong> <em>Good:<\/em> Buy fresh produce as often as you can, and organic where you\u2019re able. Remember these <a href=\"http:\/\/www.homethangs.com\/blog\/2011\/10\/blog-action-day-six-rules-to-eat-by-for-world-food-day\/\">six rules to eat by<\/a> <em>Better:<\/em> Find your local farmer\u2019s market and do as much of your shopping there as you can. <em>Best: <\/em>This summer, make some space in your back yard to grow some of your own seasonal fruits and veggies. Replacing lawn space with garden space will not only result in a bounty of fresh, delicious produce, but will also significantly reduce the amount of water you use trying to keep your lawn green.<\/p>\n<h2>Get Involved<\/h2>\n<figure id=\"attachment_12894\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-12894\" style=\"width: 400px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.earthday.org\/takeaction\/campaigns.html\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Take action! No effort is too small!<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Earth Day may only come once a year, but the changes and resolutions you make on April 22 can reach far beyond, both in your own life and in your local and global environments. And remember, no change is too small, nor any contribution insignificant \u2013 one voice in a crowd might not sound like much, but get that whole crowd talking in unison, and they\u2019re sure to make themselves heard. So, this Earth Day, don\u2019t leave it to someone else to do. Get informed, get motivated, and be the change you want to see in the world.
