As popular as modern design has become in other parts of the home, it’s been slow to catch on when it comes to decorating the bedroom. The reason for this is pretty simple: a minimalist design made up of all sharp, severe lines can easily feel cold, sterile, or just plain empty and uninteresting – pretty much anything BUT the comfortable, cozy feel you want for a bedroom. That said, it is possible to get the best of both worlds – you just need to take some care and choose a bed that adds a little softness and texture to the space.<\/p>\n

Leather is one of the most popular materials used in modern bed frames<\/a> for a couple of reasons. First, the smooth, slightly glossy surface is a natural pair for the style. But more than that, leather probably the softest, most plush material you can find that’s still considered modern. A heavily padded, leather-upholstered headboard is sleek and non-traditional enough to feel very modern, but has enough cushion to feel inviting. Often leather bed frames have button tufting for a more striking appearance, but an unembellished surface is clean and cozy, with a pleasantly pillowy appearance.<\/p>\n

If you’re less interested in cozy and more concerned that a stark minimalist modern bedroom will just be plain boring, adding a patterned leather accent to the bed frame or headboard is a great way to create a textural focal point.\u00a0 It’s a subtle change, but especially when contrasted against materials with different textures (a glossy headboard, lightly metallic wallpaper, and slinky black sheets, for example), a small variation can add a ton of visual interest to the space. While modern design is ostensibly very simple, it certainly doesn’t have to be plain; maybe more than in a traditional style, there’s lots of room to play with tactile elements, especially if you opt for a monochromatic color scheme.<\/p>\n

After all, beds are bed-shaped, and there isn\u2019t a whole lot of wiggle room when it comes to decorating either end. That said, just because it\u2019s a bed frame doesn\u2019t mean it necessarily has<\/i> to look like one. In fact, if you\u2019re primarily worried about a modern decor being a little too cold or sterile for a bedroom, your best bet is to opt for a cushy, unusually-shaped platform bed – there are more of them than you might think, and they range from sofa-like to the next best thing to a racecar bed. These soft, shaped beds are quirky and inviting – streamlined enough to be “modern” but without all the hard angles and straight lines.<\/p>\n

Now, that\u2019s fine for what it is \u2013 MDF is environmentally friendly and can look good if it\u2019s done right. But if you\u2019re trying to add a slightly warmer, homier touch to your modern bedroom, I\u2019d recommend looking for a modern bed frame that contains at least some actual wood grain. A little bit of wood add a natural touch to your modern decor, and keep it from feeling too cold or sterile. Built in lighting can also help enhance that cozy feeling, while a very simple, straightforward design will keep it from looking too traditional.<\/p>\n
